#DKEXP,

Johnny Clegg’s Royal Albert Hall show is coming to Cape Town

Johnny_Clegg_Grand_West_Poster Johnny_Clegg_Grand_West_Poster

A year ago , Johnny Clegg wowed London audiences with his show at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall. After the success of that show, Johnny Clegg  played sold out shows at The Teatro at Monte Casino in Johannesburg in November last year and now it is Cape Town’s turn.

Due to public demand, Johnny Clegg is bringing his Royal Albert Hall show to the Grand Arena at GrandWest for one show only on the 31 May 2014.

Johnny Clegg took his highly acclaimed A SOUTH AFRICAN STORY to the Royal Albert Hall in March this year and had the entire audience up on their feet. Fans from all over London, South Africans and Londoners alike, attended the show at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall.

A South African Story covers Johnny’s life through his music, and is an inspiring and uplifting voyage.  The show shares the story of his life and tells how local and international history influenced his music.

The show will include various forms of dance that influenced him and is supported by visuals that have not been seen before from Johnny’s archives as well as state of the art lighting, sound and projection.  This production will include some of Johnny Clegg’s hits, special guest artists as well as some intimate unplugged moments.

Audiences will experience the thrill of music and dance with this South African icon as he links his music to the journey South Africa has taken over the past 30 years.

During this time Clegg has become one of South Africa’s most famous exports while retaining his popularity in his home country. Aside from his musical success, he is widely recognised and respected as an anthropologist, academic and activist. Clegg also campaigned against the injustice of apartheid South Africa and has played a role in putting the new South Africa on the map.

His energetic and passionate persona, together with his anthemic hits, have made Clegg an outstanding musical ambassador for his country. By combining African music structures with Celtic folk music and international rock sounds, Clegg pioneered a new and unique sound. From Europe to the States, from Australia to Potchefstroom and London, audiences in sold out venues have danced to Cruel, Crazy Beautiful World”, Scatterlings of Africa”, I Call Your Name”, “Impi”, “Asimbonanga”, Great Heart”, and African Sky Blue”.

Last year Clegg was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga for his excellent contribution and achievement in the field of bridging African traditional music with other music forms, promoting racial understanding among racially divided groups in South Africa under difficult apartheid conditions, working for a non-racial society and being an outstanding spokesperson for the release of political prisoners.

*Show take place on 31 May, at Grand Arena, GrandWest Casino. Tickets are priced between R184 and R375 and are available through Computicket

THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS

WITH SUPPORT FROM BEATENBERG

Big Concerts is proud to announce that Beatenberg will be supporting Thirty Seconds to Mars when they tour South Africa for 2 concerts on Friday 13th June at the Grand Arena, Cape Town and Monday 16th June at the Coca-Cola Dome, Johannesburg. Presented by M-Net.

Tickets on sale now for both Johannesburg and Cape Town from www.bigconcerts.co.za and Computicket.

Beatenberg are South Africa’s new face of pop, comprising Matthew Field (Vocals/Guitar), Ross Dorkin (Bass) and Robin Brink (Drums). Songwriter Matthew says their music is about ‘emotions, images and fleeting senses of things: the mad stuff that everyone feels and almost understands’. Combined with extensive gigging and touring throughout 2013 – including performances at all of South Africa’s top music festivals – the name Beatenberg fast became familiar when the country started asking ‘Who is Chelsea Blakemore?’ after the release of their debut single in late 2013.. The collobration between Beatenberg and DJ ClockPluto (Remember You) has grown to be the biggest smash hit of the summer reaching number one across the country and holding this position for over 7 weeks, including the top spots on  5FM, Highveld, KFM, YFM and Metro FM as well as charting in the top 3 iTunes singles.

Thirty Seconds to Mars have gone on to scale the heights of rock and roll stardom and are known for their energetic live performances and their fusion of different genres. Although they found modest success with their self-titled debut, it was their second album, ‘A Beautiful Lie,’ which announced them as a bonafide rock and roll superstars. The band’s third album, ‘This is War,’ released in 2009 garnered them another three top ten singles, the first two of which peaked at the number 1 spot on the US Alternative Songs chart. Additionally, ‘Closer to the Edge’ was the fastest selling rock single in the UK and topped the UK rock chart for eight consecutive weeks. The subsequent tour set a ‘Guinness World Record for the longest concert tour by a rock band’ and helped to establish Thirty Seconds to Mars’ reputation as one of the hardest working rock bands.

Coming off the back of an outstanding European festival circuit and some scintillating performances, this is one band that you do not want to miss.

Written and directed Aubrey Sekhabi, with story-structure inputs by Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom and research by Dr Otsile Ntsoane, Hungry is a story about a poor unemployed 42 years old man Tommy (played by Sanku Bokaba), who is visited by a disgraced Afrikaner researcher and journalist, Johan (played by Brandon Auret of the District 9 and Elysium fame) who gets a second chance to redeem himself as he stands in for another researcher who fell ill on a research assignment about food insecurity and poverty at a particular poor South African working class community, where Tommy resides. The community is a fictional South African microcosm called Lusaka. This is where Tommy who leads Johan through the community’s poverty, their plight and their problems.

Johan’s visit happens at a time when two key members of this community, Mpho (played by Tshallo Chokwe) and Maponyane (played by Josias Molele). The two, with the help of their warrior-history community, have just won their land back. The community and in particular Tommy is hoping this land is going to feed them. They hope that they are going to plant organic food and prosper from their own soil. But then, like in Orwell’s Animal Farm, we discover that Mpho betrays their ideologies and his best friend and comrade, Maponyane, and sells part of the arable land to a land-grabbing multi-national company. At the end, through Tommy’s character growth and leadership, the community starts to revolt against Mpho.

As for Johan, this assignment is a make or break position for him, and he goes to great lengths to try and make this work, thinking about the future of his grieving and wayward son, Dries (played by Cameron McEwan). They both go through the hunger and the unemployment and the misery of the township and the people of Lusaka, expecting to find victims, but what they instead find is a people grappling with life and survival and a determination to overcome their misery.

Hungry is about urban poverty, food insecurity and about how these issues are interpreted and explored in a personal and communal space that takes the side of the oppressed and the hungry.
