Travelling from Vigo, Spain, 11 shipping containers, on a, four-week, 15 000+ kilometre journey across the Atlantic Ocean, state-of-the-art animatronic dinosaurs for the upcoming Days of the Dinosaur: The Exhibition have officially landed on South African shores!

Part of an international travelling exhibition featuring life-size moving, roaring dinosaurs, Days of the Dinosaur: The Exhibition will open to the South African public in Johannesburg and Cape Town from June to August this year. Exhibition-goers can immerse themselves in a prehistoric world made possible by advanced engineering on a scale never before seen in South Africa.

Shipping the dinosaurs is no easy feat, says Edmund Beukes of Media24, who is intimately involved in the exhibition’s organisation. Moving this gigantic exhibition is “extremely complex – it takes two riggers, 2 scaffolders, five technicians 14 casuals and supervisors from Argentina more than three days to dismantle the exhibition for shipping!”

Arriving on South African shores, the 55-ton (55 274 kg) exhibition will take an impressive six days to set-up because of the complex mechanics and engineering required to bring the dinosaurs to life. All-in-all, the lightest container being transported is 1.6 tons and the heaviest 13.4 tons, says Beukes.

“The exhibition will be spectacular – it’s educational, family-friendly and extremely interesting to adults and children alike,” says Beukes. With more than 45 life-size dinosaurs and two skeletons, it is bound to be a memorable experience for South African families. Having now cleared Customs, the containers will remain in Durban until 12 June, when they will begin their journey to Jo’burg for the first leg of the exhibition.

Presented by Huisgenoot, YOU and DRUM in association with Cell C, the Exhibition will show at the Sandton International Convention Centre for 4 weeks, from 20 June to 20 July.

The exhibition will now run for a full three weeks from 31 July to 20 August at the CTICC.

Tickets are available from Computicket at a cost of R140 per adult and R95 per child. Family of Four tickets are also available for R395 a family and School Groups (of more than 20 learners) will cost R85 per learner.
