Now in its fourth year, Red Bull Beat Battle has grown immensely since its first edition in 2011 and now sports some famous alumni who have gone on to do great things in the South African dance world. Back in 2014 to find the top seven dance crews to go up against last year’s champions, this year the qualifiers head to 5 cities to find Mzansi’s best.

As a platform for urban dance styles like Pantsula, iSbhujwa, Krump, Hip Hop, and Breaking, the event has unearthed some amazing talent. Choreographer and Red Bull Beat Battle head-judge Somizi Mhlongo has had the opportunity to see that firsthand.

The platform and the springboard it offers dance crews has opened many doors for crews who have placed within the top 8 in the past, allowing dancers to sustain themselves using dance as a profession.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what crews have to offer in 2014I.D.A. proved that not only Hip Hop can wow the crowds. I’m really hoping that a female dance crews will come out hard this year and be the first female group to snatch the title.”

The qualifying tour heads to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban before heading to Pretoria and Johannesburg.

The selected crews will then have to prepare to duel I.D.A, who were the first ever iSbhujwa crew to make it to the final and claim the title. They’ll go on to compete in the Red Bull Beat Battle final, crew versus crew, until there is only one crew who is victorious. The final will take place in Johannesburg on 31 May 2014.

PRESS STATEMENT: UB40 SA TOUR

24 February 2014
SEED EXPERIENCES PRESS STATEMENT: UB40 FEATURING ALI CAMPBELL

This statement serves to confirm that Seed Experiences is bringing the famous sound of UB40 to South Africa in April 2014. The band will play on Friday 4 April 2014 at Val de Vie Estate in Paarl and on Saturday 5 April 2014 at Emmarentia Dam in Johannesburg.

It is well known that the famous frontman and voice of UB40, lead singer Ali Campbell left the band in 2008 along with Micky Virtue. Additional band member, Astro (Terence Wilson), left in 2013.

In January 2014 these three members from the original band announced that they had reunited to perform live and to record new music under the name of UB40 and in the spirit of the original music. This is the tour that is coming to South Africa and is officially billed as UB40 as per the contract with their leading and reputable UK booking agent.

Seed Experiences would also like to confirm that they are aware of another band in the UK, made up of the other remaining members, that still performs under the name of UB40. This band performs without the legendary voice of Ali Campbell, Astro or Micky Virtue.

It has been brought to our attention that there is now a name dispute between the bands, which Seed Experiences is leaving the artists to settle directly and does not affect the SA Tour going ahead as planned.

Press Statement on behalf of UB40

Statement: 24 February 2014

Following the announcement by three former members of UB40, of their intention to perform live under the name "UB40", for several shows in South Africa, the five remaining founder members of UB40 wish to make the following statement:

"We would like to make it known to all UB40 fans in South Africa that the current shows being advertised at several venues in South Africa as "UB40 shows", are NOT genuine.

Three former members of UB40, Ali Campbell, Astro and Michael Virtue are fraudulently masquerading as UB40.

As our fans know, Ali Campbell left UB40 six years ago citing issues with the band's management and has since pursued a solo career. In that time, Ali has repeatedly attempted to discredit his brothers and former bandmates, through the media and otherwise. However, this latest attempt to confuse and hoodwink UB40's fans is an act of desperation- assisted by Astro, Michael Virtue and the promoter "Seed Experiences".

While their actions are highly immoral, they are also illegal, and we are currently pursuing the matter through the law courts. Meanwhile we make this statement as a warning to all UB40 fans not to be fooled by this blatant attempt to mislead and manipulate them.

We are presently in talks with our regular promoter, Attie Van Wyk of Big Concerts, who has brought us to South Africa before, and intend to tour there in the not to distant future.

We hope you will be able to join us then for a genuine UB40 concert!

UB40
Robin Campbell, Brian Travers, James Brown, Earl Falconer and Norman Hassan.

End of Statement.

SUN INTERNATIONAL’S SUN CITY CYCLISTS RIDE 1749 KM FOR CHARITY

SUN INTERNATIONAL’S SUN CITY CYCLISTS RIDE 1749 KM FOR CHARITY

IMG_6415

SUN INTERNATIONAL’S SUN CITY CYCLISTS RIDE 1749 KM FOR CHARITY

Can you imagine cycling from Sun City to the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town? That is exactly what a team of cyclists will do when they ride out through the gates of the Sun City Resort on Thursday 27 February 2014.

They will be doing so for the 12th consecutive year and will undertake the eight-stage, seven day, 1749 km Tour to again raise funds for various charities along the way. It is hoped to raise R500 000 this year.

From Sun City, they will make their way through Klerksdorp, Christiana, Kimberley, Britstown, Beaufort West, Laingsburg, and Worcester. The team will stop off at other Sun International properties namely the Flamingo Casino in Kimberley, the Golden Valley Casino and Lodge in Worcester, before reaching their final destination of the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront.

Under the leadership of Sun City’s Johann Maré who has ridden every Tour since its inception, this year’s cycle team of 18 riders includes ex-Miss SA Nicole Flint who will be riding her second Tour, this time sharing a tandem with Johann, and also taking part will be two riders from Austria and one from Germany. For four of the riders, this will be their ninth Tour. The cyclists will be accompanied by a support crew of 12 people to assist them on their long journey.

Johann says that adding to the excitement this year is a SuperSport television crew who will be travelling with the cyclists and filming them all the way. The footage is expected to be aired on SuperSport in April 2014.

The main beneficiary of the Tour will be the AIDS Orphans Housing Project near Sun City, and the Sun City Cycling Club is endeavouring to hand over bicycles to their surrounding communities before and after the Tour. The Flamingo Casino, the Golden Valley Casino and the Table Bay Hotel will also identify local beneficiaries in their regions to benefit from this year’s challenge. To date, the Tours have raised well over R6-million for various charities along their route.

You may think that riding the same journey each year could become quite boring. Maré disagrees.

“The routes have differed from year to year and that has allowed us to see different parts of the country and even Southern Africa. We have also had the thrill, for instance, of seeing game such as elephants and rhinos en route. The prime motivation for the Sun City to Table Bay Charity Cycle Tour is to push one physically and mentally through a challenging cycle tour, whilst at the same time contributing to the welfare of children in need. That’s really why we do it.”

And if you thought when the team of cyclists arrives at the Table Bay Hotel, it will be a case of relaxing in luxury with their feet up, you would be quite wrong. They will almost immediately get back onto their bikes and compete in the 109 Km Pick n Pay Cape Argus Cycle Tour, the world’s biggest individually timed cycling event.

Any thoughts of cycling back to Sun City afterwards? Interesting idea, cyclists like a challenge.

35,000 fans fill FNB Stadium for a sold out show to cap off

first ever South African Tour

Johannesburg23 February, 2014Nitro Circus Live (www.nitrocircuslive.com), the world’s most exciting, adrenalin-charged, live action-sports show, capped an unbelievably successful inaugural South African Tour on Saturday, when it performed its biggest and most spectacular show of all time, with a 35 000 sell out performance at FNB Stadium, Soweto, South Africa.

DKEXP, Nitro Circus Live-8 DKEXP, Nitro Circus Live-8

Following two sell-out shows in Cape Town and Durban, the team hit the Highveld and performed for the record breaking crowd, with the 35,000 fans smashing through the previous Nitro Circus Live record number of 28,000 tickets sold at the Arnhem, Netherlands show in 2012.

DKEXP, Nitro Circus Live-10 DKEXP, Nitro Circus Live-10

Nitro Circus Live CEO Mike Porra said, “We have been absolutely blown away by the response we’ve had to our show here in South Africa. We have been touring the globe with Nitro Circus Live for the last 4 years, but to come to a brand new market, sell out all three shows, and put on our highest selling event of all time – it’s been truly amazing. We can’t wait to come back.”

DKEXP, Nitro Circus Live-4 DKEXP, Nitro Circus Live-4

The Nitro Circus 40 strong elite cast of the world’s best action-sports athletes brought the stadium down, with death-defying dangerous stunts in freestyle motocross (FMX), BMX, skate and a host of crazy contraptions that no sane person would ever consider riding, all launched with precision and skill off the famous 50-foot high Nitro Gigant-A-Ramp.

Fans saw everything from kids’ trikes, snow skis, tandem bikes and razor scooters, through to shopping trolleys, and a Barbie car off the Gigant-A-Ramp. A highlight of the tour was the spectacular BASE jump by NCL athlete Erik Roner, from the top of the 350 foot arch at Moses Mabhida Stadium, the likes of which has never before been attempted The show also featured South Africa’s very own Nick de Wit who stamped his signature mark on the tour.

DKEXP, Nitro Circus Live-17 DKEXP, Nitro Circus Live-17

Some of the highlights of the show included wheelchair athlete Aaron ‘Wheelz’ Fotheringham landing a perfect frontflip for the first time ever on the African continent, and James Foster also landing a South African first ever triple backflip on a BMX bike. American skateboarder Beaver Fleming stomped a world first double finger flip backflip, bringing the 35k strong crowd to their feet.

The Johannesburg event brings to a close an outrageously successful first South African Tour, with over 80,000 people packed into stadiums across the country’s three major cities. Judging by the reaction of the fans, with rousing standing ovations at the completion of each show, and an astounding response on social media nationwide, it won’t be long before the world’s greatest live action sports show returns to South African soil to thrill with their jaw-dropping performances.

Ends.
